Finish the weekend with new skills in realist painting and your still life beautifully framed - to give as a gift for someone special or to keep just for you. Choose your still life props from a selection to personalise your painting or bring a special object from home to add to your composition.

Chinese brush painting is done with ink and watercolour on special Chinese papers using Chinese brushes. Learn how to do six caligraphy brush strokes to produce many subjects of Traditional Chinese subject matter.
Using knowledge accumulated from generations of artists, you will have the opportunity to receive the skills necessary to complete a beautiful portrait from life. Your training will be divided into 3 developmental projects, ‘The Value of the Cast’, ‘Portrait in Noir’, and ‘Black and Blue’. The first part in a series of three workshops, focuses on the value of the cast and cast drawing, as the vital initial stage in oil portrait painting. A materials list will be provided. This 4 week experimental workshop is intended for artists who already have some practical painting skills and experience but feel you would benefit from regular professional tuition to help you develop your own subjects and ideas alongside other painters. Working from observation, photograph or other references, you will be given individual guidance to help you develop your own painting practice. The sessions are spaced fortnightly to allow time to work further on your paintings on your own. There will also be excellent opportunity for discussion and group analysis, and expert advice on materials and working methods. Suggested Materials Paints: Oils or acrylics: titanium white, cadmium yellow pale, yellow ochre, cadmium red, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, prussian blue, burnt sienna, raw umber, viridian Brushes: Hog bristle for oils, synthetic for acrylics- a variety of sizes and shapes Supports: Primed painting boards or canvases Sundries: Oils: a large, flat mixing palette (approx 11”x 16”, melamine, or a disposable palette), palette knife, old rags, LOW ODOUR SOLVENT and jar, refined linseed oil and small jar/dipper, Acrylics: a large, flat mixing palette, jars and rags Old/protective clothing *Booking conditions: Places are limited to 12 students per workshop. In the morning you'll create a collagraph printing plate, carving, scoring and stopping out the surface. You'll use adhesives to add materials to the surface and then seal the plate with shellac. In the afternoon you'll learn to "ink up" and polish back your plate. Then you'll print your collagraph on a press, making several images to take home.
This is an introduction to pastel painting. We'll talk about papers, types of pastels, pastel pencils etc. and take a brief look at pastel painting techniques. There will be a demonstration and if you wish to bring your own pastels and paper, you can work on the same subject, or if you prefer you can just watch the demo.
A chat about the pros and cons of painting with Acrylics and demonstrations on my approach to painting. There will be an opportunity for those who wish, to have a go at using Acrylic paints (provided)
Shooqi is a well-known painter and graphic designer. His recent solo exhibition at the NSA was very successful and well received. He will be painting a harbour view with boats, using photographs as references.

This will introduce use of a tablet computer for creating a picture using the Autodesk Sketchbook app. There will be an overview and a demonstration, followed by a general discussion - something for both beginners and those who've already tried tablet drawing. No materials are required but bring your tablet and/or smartphone if you want. You can install and try out a free limited version of Sketchbook or the full version for a few pounds from your tablet's app store.
In the morning, using rhenalon plates and simple intaglio engraving methods, you'll create an etched image ready to print. In the afternoon you'll learn how to "ink up" and print your plates on a press. Several images can be printed to take home.
This morning session will cover the basic techniques for beginners and move on to more advanced, wet on wet techniques. Using stretched watercolour paper we will paint blended skies and flowing, imaginative flowers.
